The Dolly Parton Podcast

Dolly wakes up early. Like when the rooster crows. Picture 12 kids growing up in a Unabomber-size shack in the Smoky Mountains and you have a glimpse of her childhood.

So it's no surprise lil' miss rise-and-shine likes to do her interviews early in the morning, before she gets around to the day's business - which lately has been holing up in a studio recording with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell and reworking a twangy cover of the Fine Young Cannibals '80s hit "She Drives Me Crazy."

But herein lies the problem: She's in Nashville, which is two hours later. I've never been an early riser. Or better yet, I have a hard time functioning in the wee hours before the sun rises. When her manager offered a take-it-or-leave-it interview at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (actually, at first he mentioned she often gets up at 3 a.m.), my only question was: Her time or mine?

Flash forward to 6:30 a.m. the next day. Country and chipper, Dolly wakes me up with, "I'm sorry for dragging your ass up so early, but I've gotta go to work and I was afraid I might miss you if I didn't gitcha early."

Looking out the window in the dark, I couldn't help but laugh and say, "I'd wake up at 3 in the morning to talk to you."

Chatty and charming as ever, the Backwoods Barbie is a hoot. She drops by the Grace Pavilion for a sold-out Valentine's Day show next week.

Listen to a surreal quickie interview here.

Comment: This show exemplifies our mission of connecting our community through the Arts. Where else but a Dolly Parton show in Santa Rosa can you connect Country music fans, members of the gay community, seniors and all around music lovers? Whether you're coming in (for the show) from Santa Rosa or New York City, whether you drive a pick up truck or a Mercedes Benz, people from all walks of life love Dolly - and she loves them back!

Comment: thanks for sharing that on your blog...she's just so terrific and I love that you asked her about her gay and lesbian fans. She truly engenders the spirit the world that we could all use more of, acceptance of each other as we are, flaws and all. It would be really funny to get a picture of Dolly standing next to a 6'5" Dolly drag queen! She's so tiny!
