Like a Boston mallrat from the '80s, Eugene Hutz loves the word "wicked."
How's the tour? "Oh, it's pretty wicked man."
When he barks it out in a stiff Ukrainian accent it sounds almost brand-new again.
Tell him you're looking forward to the 12th annual California Herdeljezi Roma Festival in Sebastopol this weekend and he says, "Well, wicked man, let's do it. It's gonna be from electronic gypsy punk and DJ-style to acoustic authentic style the way it's been done in the fields and forests for centuries."
The Gogol Bordello gypsy punk bandleader and curator of the annual New Gypsy Festival has heard all the "dumb stereotypes."
"Anything about gypsies that is true will always destroy stereotypes," he says. "Simply because what everybody else knows is a (freaking) lie. It came to a point where we can do no wrong."
Friday night, Hutz gets behind the turntable for the gypsy DJ mash he's been spinning for over a decade now - "a real amalgamation of all gypsy styles that shows the uniting thread of duende among all of them." Then on Saturday, he breaks it down old school for a few acoustic sets.
"Once I'm there I might as well do the whole thing," he says. "Gogol Bordello is essentially a gypsy rock-and-roll band, but my roots and my foundation is in acoustic gypsy music that's been played around at tables and family feasts. It's still a huge part of who I am."
While in SoCo, he's crashing with his buddy Primus frontman Les Claypool. It turns out they're rehearsing a set of Tom Waits songs with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett for the upcoming Superjam at Bonnaroo.

With gas prices breaking the $4 barrier, the time has finally come to trade in the Hummer for the Scooter.
If a 100 miles to the gallon doesn't turn you on, this weekend's Scooter Rosa 2.0 rally should clinch the deal. It's a party. It's a ride. And it's a helluva lot greener than your SUV.
The annual Big Brothers and Sisters benefit thrown by Revolution Moto owners Roy and Johnna Gattinella spotlights "scoot-in" movies Friday night, Sol Horizon reggae and Russian River brew on Saturday and a ride to the coast on Sunday.
